PROJECT OVERVIEW

Even more involved school communities, new forms of support, ZERO WASTE School Participatory Budgets, Oxford’s debates, school campaigns and ZERO WASTE fairs, metropolitan civil panels and online tool: ZERO WASTE LOCAL MAP - this all and more awaiting the participant of the project “TURN ON ZERO WASTE!”.

PROJECT GOALS

The aim of the project is increasing civic and social participation of young people and to increase the involvement of young people in local policies of ecology and ZERO WASTE/ LESS WASTE (ZW/LW) in Wielkopolska’s local governments. The project is implemented within the years 2022-2024. As part of project, School Eko-Leaders Clubs will be created in 20 school institutions of Wielkopolska region, in which educational program will be implemented to educate young people to be more civically, socially and ecologically responsible, mindful of the needs of the natural environment, respecting the rights of others and willingly engaging to volunteer.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS

Each of 20 schools (primary and secondary) provides for participation of students and teachers in a series of workshops preparing for the activities of the School Eko-Leaders Clubs (SKEL).

  • TEACHER’S SMART ACADEMY - performing the function of a SKEL tutor.
  • SCHOOL OF ACTIVITY LEADERS - a series of workshops introducing social and ecological topics in every school:
    • workshops: How to organize your own social and civil project?
    • workshops: How to effectively promote actions in the local community?
    • workshops: How to live with ZERO WASTE’s rules and why is it worth it?
    • workshops: How to organize Oxford’s debates at school?
    • workshops: How to organize ZERO WASTE School Participatory Budget

SCHOOL EKO-LEADERS CLUBS (SKEL) - ACTIVITIES

Each Club will implement various social and civic initiatives:

  1. ACTION: WE TURN ON PARTICIPATION AT SCHOOL - ZERO WASTE SCHOOL PARTICIPATORY BUDGET - students of each school will submit ideas and vote for a project that will be implemented in school. Mini-projects should be used for practical implementation of the idea ZERO WASTE/ LESS WASTE in the school community (e.g.: purchase of givebox wardrobe, waste segregation baskets, container for plastic caps, organization of workshops ZERO WASTE)
  2. ACTION: SCHOOL’S ZERO WASTE CAMPAIGN AND ZERO WASTE LOCAL MAP - the campaign will be based on each individual idea of young people - it may be flash mob, happening, organization of performance, an a art competition or an open meeting with an ecologist. Part of campaign will be completing the Zero Waste Local Map pointing to places friendly to ideas ZERO WASTE and LESS WASTE
  3. ACTION: ZERO WASTE FAIR - the involvement of school community in mutual exchange, apparently needless things (e.g.: books, puzzles, clothes, toys) to give them a second life
  4. ACTION: THE OXFORD’S DEBATE - we are building the dialogue’s culture, mutual respect and open discussion based on retinol arguments, not emotional.

CONSULTATION PORTAL, LOCAL ZERO WASTE MAP TOOL, PUBLICATIONS, GAMES, WEBINARS

The project is not only about activities in schools, but also:

    • ZERO WASTE and LESS WASTE in the cooperative local government - A guide for local government officials and residents
    • An addition to the board game entitled ZERO WASTE IN THE LAND OF THE GREAT SPIRIT
  • organizing webinars for local government officials and members of Youth Councils, Housing Estate Councils and Village Councils from the Poznań Metropolitan Area, during which experts will strengthen awareness of ecology and the implementation of ZERO WASTE and LESS WASTE objectives in offices and auxiliary local governments.
  • organization of two conferences: the MODERN SCHOOL SUPPORTS ECOLOGY and ZERO WASTE conference and the conference summarizing the project.

MASTERPLAN FOR ZERO WASTE

We will carry out a participatory process, unique on a national scale, of preparing and implementing a new model of local policy in the field of ZERO WASTE and LESS WASTE covering the area of the Poznań Metropolis with an impact on the entire Wielkopolska region.

This process will include:

  1. ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE - on the metropolitan consultation portal www.konsultacje.metropoliapoznan.pl we will publish a survey diagnosing consumer attitudes of Wielkopolska residents and attitudes to changes in terms of dei ZERO WASTE / LESS WASTE
  2. ONLINE CITIZENS' PANELS - we will organize 3 virtual citizens' panels on the subject of ZERO WASTE / LESS WASTE to find out the motivation and causes of social views that hinder the implementation of the ZERO WASTE / LESS WASTE idea.
  3. ONLINE PANEL FOR JST OFFICIALS - an analogous panel examining the attitudes of officials.

The implementation of the listed elements (1-3) will end with the preparation of a research report, and then two substantive documents will be prepared:

  • MASTERPLAN FOR ZERO WASTE IN THE POZNAŃ METROPOLIS – a document initiating a new local policy on ZERO WASTE / LESS WASTE with specific guidelines for local governments and residents.
  • ZERO WASTE DIRECTION FOR WIELKOPOLSKA - a document with recommendations for all local government units in the voivodeship - will be provided to all local government units in Wielkopolska with the right to use it to increase the impact of the project.

STUDY VISITS

During the project, a component of international cooperation was planned: Poland-Norway-Slovenia assuming:

  • The study visit in Slovenia (Ljubljana) organized in cooperation with a Slovenia partner - EBM (Polish name: Ecologist without barriers)
  • The study visit in Norway (Oslo) organized in cooperation with a Norway partner - Norsensus Mediaforum
  • The study visit in Poland (Poznań) organized by CREO with the Poznań Metropolis Association for representatives of EBM and Norsensus (foreign partners) on the occasion of organizing one of the Conferences in Poland.

Stowarzyszenie Centrum Rozwoju Edukacji Obywatelskiej CREO (Polish), The CREO Civic Education Development Center Association (English) was established in 2004. From the very beginning, our main goal is comprehensive action for the development of civil society, stimulating the social activity of citizens, supporting non-governmental organizations and social initiatives, as well as promoting and popularizing the idea of volunteering. Among our activities, we prioritize the area of education and upbringing of the youngest. With this in mind, we have been implementing numerous educational projects in schools for many years. Their main assumption is to introduce children and young people to the subject of volunteering and civil society in practice, and to engage them in voluntary work for the benefit of those in need. At the moment, we are already conducting our activities in 80 schools in Greater Poland. Moreover, the CREO Association is also active in developing the idea of corporate and senior volunteering.

Stowarzyszenie Metropolia Poznań (Polish), The Poznań Metropolis Association (English) was established in 2011 and it consists of 23 local government units, including: the City of Poznań, the Poznań Poviat, 17 communes of the Poznań Poviat and four communes from the neighboring poviats. The aim of the Association is to support the idea of local government and protect the common interests of its members, in particular to support socio-economic development and cooperation of local governments. The association is mainly involved in initiating cooperation between local governments in such areas as EU funds, developing the idea of a metropolitan railway, urban mobility and integration of public transport, spatial planning and systematic improvement of the quality of life of residents.

Norsensus Mediaforum is an experienced organization from Norway, established in 2012, whose main area of activity is to support and improve the community (especially young people and from excluded groups) in creating media information and social campaigns, and through civic activity to create projects that integrate and open to diversity . Norsensus has extensive experience in creating media tools (films and services) and implementing workshops preparing for citizen journalism.

Društvo Ekologi Brez Meja - EBM (Slovenian), The Ecologists without Borders Association (English) is one of the leading Slovenian NGOs dealing with the improvement of the environment - focusing on the efficient use of resources and civic activation. EBM is an active member of several international networks such as Zero Waste Europe, Let's do it world !, Break Free From Plastic. EBM fights for a waste-free world through research, awareness-raising, education, collaboration and the creation of good practices. EBM also educates about the impact of waste on the climate. Since 2004, he has been running a growing network of cities that have adopted zero waste strategies, aiming at waste prevention and better management. In terms of education, EBM has co-implemented several Erasmus + projects and regularly conducts meetings and workshops for a variety of audiences, especially pupils and pupils in Slovenian schools. Currently, EBM is running a citizen science project on waste for schools across the country.

Each Club will implement various social and civic initiatives:

  1. SCHOOL CIVIC ECO-BUDGET (SBO EKO) - students of each school will submit ideas and vote for a project that will be implemented in the school. Mini-projects should be used to build an environmentally friendly school or to increase environmental awareness (e.g. purchase of boards informing about climate change, installation for mini rainwater retention at school, waste segregation baskets, organization of an event increasing sensitivity to climate change).
  2. VOLUNTEERING PRO-ECOLOGICAL ACTION FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY
  3. SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGN
  4. SCHOOL OXFORD ECO-DEBATE

    The tool was developed in 2020 by a project team from the Faculty of Human Geography and Planning of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, within the framework of the international TeRRIFICA project (Horizon 2020, GA No. 824489, https://terrifica.eu/). The crowdmapping tool was used successfully in 2021 in the work on the "Climate Change Adaptation Plan of the Poznań Metropolis."

During the project, an international cooperation component was planned: Poland-Norway-Slovenia, assuming:

  • Study visit to Slovenia (Ljubljana) organized in cooperation with with a Slovenian partner - EBM (Polish name: Ecologists without borders)
  • Study visit to Norway (Oslo) organized in cooperation with with a Norwegian partner - Norsensus Mediaforum
  • Study visit to Poland (Poznań) organized by CREO in cooperation with the Poznań Metropolis Association for representatives of EBM and Norsensus (foreign partners) on the occasion of organizing one of the Conferences in Poland.
